The construction of local identity through political discourse: the case of San Luis

Although the term puntanidad – which refers to the identity of the inhabitants of San Luis (Argentina) - has relatively recently been established in society through governmental actions and discourse, it has already been developed by others authors from perspectives as varied as History, Poetry, Discourse Analysis and Psychology (Tobares, 1999; Lobo, 2011; Trocello, 2004). This study presents an exploration of the lexico-grammatical and prosodic resources used in the instantiation of the puntanidad concept in a corpus formed by three speeches corresponding to Adolfo Rodríguez Saá (former Governor of San Luis), Alberto Rodriguez Saá (current Governor of San Luis) and Claudio Poggi (former Governor of San Luis). This investigation draws on the analytical framework proposed by the Appraisal System (Martin and Rose, 2003; Martin and White, 2005), which is based on Systemic Functional Linguistics (Halliday, 2004, 2014). The aim of the observation is twofold: (a) to contribute to the studies on categorization of Appraisal resources in Spanish, and (b) to explore differences and similarities among the speeches of these three politicians in relation to the type of meanings associated with the construction of San Luis identity and the resources used to express them. The results of this analysis are expected to help establish potential correspondences between the meanings emerging from this work and those established in previous studies on the subject, and thus promote the articulation between social and linguistic theories.
