Deictics in spoken Spanish in the Guaraní community “La Bendición” (Salvador Mazza, Salta, Argentina)

In this paper, we analyse the use of adverbs aquí and ahí, and pronouns ese and este as coded in the topological relations of the Spanish variety spoken in the Guaraní community “La Bendición” (Prof. Salvador Mazza, Salta, Argentina). The study is framed within the theoretical-methodological perspective known as semantic typology, which makes it possible to analyse the spatial conceptualizations and identify the formal distinctions that allow for access to the semantic domain of space (Levinson and Wilkins, 2006). In order to mark spatial distinctions, we examined a corpus of answers obtained through the elicitation tool “Topological Relations Picture Series (TRPS)” (Bowerman and Pederson, 1992). This visual stimulus was composed of 71 images, but we only selected those that separate from the prototypical semantic features of a Basic Locative Construction. The analysis of demonstrative pronouns of place indicates that not all answers which include deictics refer to scenes with similar semantic features, since following Levinson (1999, p. 30-32), demonstratives have different functions and are not limited to a single spatial use. The way in which space is perceptually organised is influenced by many factors, though not all are relevant in the coding process. We believe that this investigation contributes to explaining the complexity of spatial conceptualizations, which is linked to the concept of social deixis, and to identify the characteristics of the spatial domain in the Spanish spoken by members of the Guaraní community “La Bendición”.
