Abstract

Research studies show that many university students do not recognize all forms of plagiarism. It has also been demonstrated that, even when knowing that they are plagiarizing, students who write in a second or foreign language do not always have the linguistic skills and strategies to rephrase correctly the texts that they wish to cite. The authors of this article analysed previous research on plagiarism in language learning processes. The objective was starting to reflect on the way a language course is taught and the principles of intellectual integrity in a brief, playful and efficient way, considering the level of learners' language competence. The article is divided into five sections, and it concludes with a reflection. In the first place, textual borrowing forms will be addressed in order to determine which of them can be considered a way to plagiarism. In this way, we expect to verify whether plagiarism approaches are primarily cultural or developmental. Then, the plagiarism-related perceptions of instructors and language university students are presented. Finally, this article proposes a brief description of some computer-assisted tools to prevent plagiarism and promote academic integrity. This work is part of the first phase of a project that will later be completed with a practical application.
